SEIU 73 Rally and March March 16

SEIU Local 73, representing building and service workers on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign fighting for a fair contract, will hold a rally and march on Wednesday, March 16 from noon until 1 p.m. It will begin at the Alma Mater at the corner of Wright and Green streets, then will proceed to the Henry Administration building for some noise. Come out and support this union and their members, which has been strung out in bargaining for months with the University. Many make less than $30,000 per year despite providing vital services to the University community, many are laid off during the summer, and many lack adequate job security provisions. Theirs is not just a good cause; it is our cause. They need and deserve as much support as they can get.

SEIU 73 Thanks UIUC Student Senate for Support Resolution

SEIU staffer Ricky Baldwin, who has been helping to lead a tough local fight and bargaining with the University of Illinois, has posted a letter of thanks to the Student Senate which passed a resolution supporting SEIU Local 73. It contains vital details of some of the University’s bare-bones proposals. The letter is posted below in its entirety.

THANKS to UIUC Student Senate for passing this resolution in support of SEIU workers!

Whereas, according to a recent article published on January 29th in the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette, University of Illinois Building and Food Service workers voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike , and

Whereas, according to the article, Food Service workers typically earn $15,000 per year, are laid off during most longer University Holidays and are ineligible for unemployment benefits during these periods “because they can be called back at any time for a couple hours here or there,” and

Whereas, Building Service workers earn $30,000 per year but face often dangerous working conditions, and

Whereas, all University Housing and Dining facilities, facilities that serve a large number of students on this campus, are staffed by Building and Food Service workers, and

Whereas, achieving labor equity should be a goal for the Student Affairs community, and

Whereas, a fair work environment is an important tenet, supported by state and federal law, and

Therefore, let it be resolved that the Illinois Student Senate does urge the University to work towards a fair resolution of contract negotiations with members of SEIU Local 73 in order to avoid a strike and interruption of campus services, and

Let it further be resolved that the Illinois Student Senate supports the right of all workers on this campus to fair compensation, benefits, and working conditions, and

Let it further be resolved that a copy of this resolution be transmitted to the Office of the President of the University of Illinois, the Office of the Vice President/Chief Financial Officer and Comptroller, the Office of the Vice President and Chancellor of the Urbana Campus, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Office of the Director of University Housing, members of the Building/Food Service collective bargaining committee, members of SEIU Local 73, members of the University of Illinois Academic Senate Executive Committee, the Daily Illini, the Champaign-Urbana News Gazette and WILL/Illinois Public Media.
